4. Is there a difference between a podiatrist and a foot and ankle specialist?

Yes, there are distinct differences between a podiatrist and a foot and ankle specialist. Podiatrists focus on lower extremity conditions, treating everything from skin issues and nail disorders to foot mechanics and minor surgical procedures. In contrast, orthopaedic foot and ankle specialists are medical doctors who specialise in diagnosing and addressing more complex musculoskeletal issues of the foot and ankle through both surgical and non-surgical means. These specialists handle severe conditions like fractures, ligament tears, and reconstructive surgery, which are beyond the typical scope of podiatry.

5. How do you know if your ankle needs surgery?

Ankle surgery might be necessary when pain or structural problems significantly impair your ability to use your ankle and non-surgical treatments have failed to improve your condition. If you experience persistent discomfort or mobility limitations, consult with a foot and ankle specialist to determine if surgery is the best course of action for restoring function and alleviating pain.

6. How long does foot and ankle surgery take?

The duration of foot and ankle surgery varies depending on the type of procedure being performed and the complexity of the individual’s condition. Simple procedures like ankle arthroscopy might take less time, whereas more complex surgeries such as reconstructions or repairs could require several hours to complete.

7. How long is bed rest after foot surgery?

Post-surgery recovery protocols, including bed rest, differ based on the type of foot surgery performed. Most patients are generally advised to rest to reduce swelling and help with the healing process for at least two weeks post-operation. Your foot and ankle surgeon will provide specific guidelines based on your surgery and overall health.

8. Is ankle surgery a major surgery?

The classification of ankle surgery as major or minor largely depends on the specific type and extent of the procedure. Minimally invasive surgeries like arthroscopy are considered less major and involve quicker recovery times. However, procedures involving extensive reconstruction or replacement may be classified as major surgeries due to their complexity and the rehabilitation required.

9. How is post-operative care managed?

Post-operative care at OrthofootMD is managed directly by Dr. Gowreeson and his clinical staff. They provide personalised aftercare, ensuring each patient’s recovery is on track and optimally supported.
